USAGE AND EFFECTIVENESS

Usage Effectiveness
High Blood Pressure Mild effectiveness (Reduce blood pressure)
• Several clinical studies showed that casein peptides may reduce blood pressure (systolic (pressure when the heart contracts)by 3mm mercury and diastolic (pressure when the heart relaxes)by 1.5mm mercury).
• Lower dose may seem to be more effect and effect may be better on Japanese patients than European patients.
• Studies concerning individuals with metabolic syndrome did not show benefits; this may be due to small sample size; more evidence is needed.
Eczema Effective (Lower the probability of eczema)
• Shown in several strong clinical studies that usage of casein peptides in formula milk for 9 months to 2 years after birth may decrease probability of having eczema by half or almost three quarter , especially if the baby's family has allergy.
• Usage of casein peptides in first 4 months of life may offer protection against eczema, lowering probability by 29% as compared to normal formula.
• Several strong clinical studies to support the point above
Skin Conditions Effective (Reduce risk of allergies for those with genetic tendency to have allergies)
• Shown in several strong clinical studies that usage of casein peptides in first 4 months of life or after weaning may reduce probability of developing asthma, allergic nose and eczema, by about 40% at the first 12 to 18 months of their lives and about 20% at 6 years old (as compared to usual formula).
• Benefit may only be seen in those whose family have allergies; for children without any family member with allergies, usage of casein peptides may not confer any advantage over usual formula.
• Several strong clinical studies to support the point above.
Allergies Effective (alternative for infants with cow's milk allergy)
• Shown in several strong clinical studies to be better accepted by children with diagnosed cow's milk allergy.
• Several strong clinical studies to support the point above.
Neonatal Jaundice Effective (Reduce risk of jaundice)
• Shown in some clinical studies that casein peptides may decrease the probability of jaundice in infants; in a study, those who were supplemented with 5ml of casein peptides based milk (on top of breast milk)(6 times daily for 1 week) may decrease lab test results related to jaundice
• More clinical studies are needed to support more widespread usage.
• Neonatal Jaundice is condition in babies where the eye white and skin turn yellow due to excessive bilirubin(a breakdown product of red blood cell).
Colic Mild effectiveness (Reduce symptoms)
• Two clinical studies showing that casein peptides may reduce crying duration & intensity and lessen stomach discomfort in infants; usefulness of one of the studies may be reduced due to poor study design (no valid comparison)
• More evidence is needed to support the above.
Diabetes Mild effectiveness (Reduce blood sugar levels)
• Several clinical studies showed that taking casein peptides together with carbohydrate may reduce blood sugar levels after meal (5% to 28%) and insulin levels after meal (as compared to taking carbohydrate alone).
• Effect of casein peptides (broken down from casein protein) may seem more than casein protein itself.
• Contrary to most studies, one study found that casein peptides may not benefit blood sugar management; however, it could be due to poor study design; more evidence is needed to support more wide spread usage of casein peptides in diabetes.
Sports Performance Mild effectiveness (Improve sports performance)
• One clinical study showed that casein peptide may reduce body fat percentage (by 3%), add lean body mass (by 2kg), increase chest, shoulder, and leg press strength (by 30%); more evidence is needed to support more extensive use.
Exercise-induced Muscle Ache & Soreness Mild effectiveness (Reduce muscle soreness)
• One clinical study showing a decrease in exercise-induced muscle ache, and increase late-exercise-time-trial performance; existing study is too small; more evidence is needed.
Insomnia Mild effectiveness (Improve sleep efficiency)
• One clinical study showed that casein peptides may increase in sleep efficiency; existing study is too small; more evidence is needed.
Diarrhoea Unclear effectiveness
• A study showed that casein peptides did not bring benefit than yoghurt based diet; more evidence is needed.
Asthma Unclear effectiveness
• 3 clinical studies showed that taking casein peptides with or without breastmilk may not decrease the probability of developing asthma for children with family members with allergies, while one small studies found that taking casein peptides may reduce shortness of breath (as compared to cow milk formula) by 61%.
• More evidence is needed.
Infant Development Unclear effectiveness
• Multiple clinical studies showed that taking casein peptides may not improve growth for premature, or low weight or normal babies(as compared to breast milk).
• More evidence is needed.
Physical Performance Unclear effectiveness
• One clinical study did not prove that taking casein peptides together with exercise regime may increase strength or alter the body fat (compared to formular without active ingredient)
• More evidence is needed.
